4 October – the start of World Space Week

World Space Week starts on 4 October.  Please check my post The Solar System from May 6 for some ideas.  I also have a Solar System section in my links.

If you are working on space travel with pre-school children you may want to check out Nick Sharratt’s Rocket Countdown, Walker Books

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rocket-Countdown-Nick-Sharratt/dp/1406322245/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1284705078&sr=1-1

The  children in my class love this book.  We act out all the 10 steps of going to the moon and then ‘Blast off!’ at the end with the astronaut in his rocket.  There is also some very useful language like ‘Fasten your seatbelt.’ (A great way to convince children to put on their seat belt in the car) or ‘Put on your helmet.’ (when they are riding their bike).

If you go to the British Council website:

you could show the children the cartoon of astronauts doing the Hokey Cokey on the moon.  Children think it’s hilarious.

They also like Billy and Splodge’s story about looking for animals in space.  This works on the colours.

Let older children watch the Solar System song on the British Council website but remind them that Pluto isn’t a planet now.
